DEAN MCMENAMIN // ABOUT ME
I was born and raised in Co.Monaghan where I attended St.Macartan's College before studying creative Digital Media in ITB in Dublin. After University I decided I needed to go out and experience the world and was inspired by the Irish author Dervla Murphy and her first book 'Full Tilt '. In the book Dervla travels to India on a three speed bicycle and paints a vivid picture of the people and cultures she meets along the way. Wanting to experience the elements, people and cultures I bought a bicycle, called it Fíona and undertook my own adventure to reach India. Leaving St. Stephen's green in April 2013 with a one way ferry ticket to France. Little did I know that I would end up cycling over 44,000km on 5 continents in some of the worlds most dangerous Countries. This journey I undertook brought me into contact with many different experience and was moved by the hospitality and generosity I experience on my travels. Putting myself out of you're comfort zone and experiencing life in the moment gave me a greater appreciation of life.
44,000KM // 33 COUNTRIES // 5 CONTINENTS
On my travels I have been invited to speak to schools and businesses both large and small and give Q & A sessions afterwards. I bring up my past experiences and struggles I had before leaving on my adventure and the journey it took to build up the motivation to decided to go off cycling. I talk about life on the road, the constant daily battles of finding water, shelter and food along with the exposure to some of the harshest elements , from 50+ degrees in the middle east to -20 in New Zealand. I traveled through some of the worlds most war-torn countries like Kosovo, Iraq and Iran and was greeted with open arms and generosity. A far cry from the medias portrayal of these places. If you would like to touch and arrange for me to speak at your school, business or event please click on the 'book now' button below and I will get in touch with you as soon as possible.
